The Gooch on Dubs!

bucho @ 12:48 pm January 30th, 2006

Finally, I purchased a new car, but I failed to get rid of my other four. So, welcome number five…

Dubs

I wanted an Audi TT, but a decided to save a few thousand and purchase a used Red 2005 Ford Mustang with chrome 20″ rims. I was never a Mustang guy, but I love this car.

To break in my new whip I decided a day trip to San Francisco was in order. Our first stop was the Sony Metreon.

Metreon Front

It is an impressive builing with very modern architecture… very well done.

Metreon Park

Out back there is a small, but excellent park.

Now for the bad news. Sony Metreon is a complete waste of time. There are a few restaurants, a couple Sony stores, an arcade, and a movie theater. Who cares about the food, everything at the Sony stores you can get at Best Buy, the arcade is severely outdated, and woohoo a movie theater… where have I seen one of those before. I don’t see how this place got featured on the Travel Channel and other shows. This place blows. Oh well, now we know.

Japantown

After we left (after an hour) we headed to Japantown. We got there at about 4:45pm and decided to get something to eat. We walked in the first place we came to and it turned out to be a Teppanyaki restaurant. The food was good (not the best I have had, but worth it), about $18 a plate, and you get a cool show. The problem was we didn’t plan very well and finished eating about 5:50pm and the stores close at 6:00pm. Damn it! Oh well, we will just have to come back another day. We did find three stores that closed later so we browed a book store and bought a book, browsed a car shop and bought some air freshener, and browsed a cafe and bought coffee and a raspberry dessert.

Raspberry

Anyway, go to Japantown and stay away from Sony Metreon.

Its only right that el bucho be rollin’ on the DUBS. I love the new car.

What is that building with the layers of disk like roof? That looks really cool.

I remember going to the Sony Metreon a while back and thinking it was cool back then. Sounds like it is really outdated.

The “building” is a three-story white pagoda made out of concrete called “The Peace Pagoda”. It is located in what is known as the Peace Plaza in Japantown.

The Peace Pagoda was designed by world-renowned Tokyo architect Yoshiro Taniguchi and donated to Japantown in 1968 by its sister city, Osaka. The structure was a gesture of goodwill from Japan to the United States, and has since become one of Japantown’s biggest tourist attractions. The original design was inspired by a set of round pagodas that existed more than 1200 years ago in Nara, the ancient capital of Japan. The initial structure featured a 17-century old eternal flame (left picture) that was donated by the Sumida Shrine in Osaka and a reflecting fish-pond (second from left) that encircled the Pagoda. However, due to leakage and other problems, the Pagoda was renovated in 2000 and select features were removed.
