R.I.P. Lik-sang.com

Do not know quite what to say about this. Sony has caused Lik-sang.com to shut down due to multiple lawsuits. They used tactics to bleed the company dry in legal fees, opening as many cases as possible in as many regions as possible.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - OUT OF BUSINESS NOTICE

Hong Kong, October 24th of 2006 - Lik-Sang.com, the popular gaming retailer from Hong Kong, has today announced that it is forced to close down due to multiple legal actions brought against it by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Limited and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Sony claimed that Lik-Sang infringed its trade marks, copyright and registered design rights by selling Sony PSP consoles from Asia to European customers, and have recently obtained a judgment in the High Court of London (England) rendering Lik-Sang’s sales of PSP consoles unlawful.

Lik-sang.com was my prefered online shop to import games from Japan and other countries. It was one of the most popular, and only websites that offered this service to gamers worldwide. I was able to pre-order games and get them days after they were released in Japan, for the same cost as a US release. In addition they sold many things that are not avaliable anywhere else, and offered deals that cannot be matched on things such as Metal DDR pads.

Sony has sunk to a new low with this effort. Here is Sony’s justification:

ultimately, we’re trying to protect consumers from being sold hardware that does not conform to strict EU or UK consumer safety standards, due to voltage supply differences et cetera; is not - in PS3’s case - backwards compatible with either PS1 or PS2 software; will not play European Blu-Ray movies or DVDs; and will not be covered by warranty

To “protect consumers” they have just, to put it kindly, raped the import market, removing one of the only places avaliable for average consumers to get things for a resonable price. This reeks of greed, more than anything. Shut down the little guy who sells our hardware for cheaper than we do in the UK. Consumers who are importing know damn well what they are buying, and do not need protection from Sony.

Goodbye Free Worldwide Shipping on Imports.
Goodbye to the supplier who sold me my DS Lite months before a US release.
Goodbye to the supplier who provided me with Berserk, Bleach, Soul Caliber 2, Naruto 1, Naruto 2, Naruto 3, Naruto 4, and countless other games. Not to mention mugs, t-shirts, and more.

Farewell Lik-sang.com. The gaming community will miss you.

Future PSWii60 Combo

Cory Maddox @ 5:56 pm Friday, October 13th, 2006

October and November this year are going to be expensive, expensive, expensive. :)

Preorders

Wiiiiii. :)

Luckily I was able to take care of both my Wii and PS3 pre-order this week. Now I will be able to avoid the insane PS3 shortages at launch, and more importantly, I will not loose an arm to the angry soccer mothers looking to get “The new Nintendo, console thingie” for their little Billies and Stephanies.

STampede for Wii

The months of September to November have been and will continue to be amazing for console gaming. Final Fantasy 12, Okami, Persona 3 (Devil Summoner), Zelda Twilight Princess, Dragon Ball Z: Tenkaichi 2, as well as two new console launches.

Comment spam is so depressing :(

Scott Rippee @ 10:56 pm Tuesday, August 8th, 2006

Do you run a site that has a public commentable space? Is keeping comment spam free driving you crazy? I wish I had an answer. That magical solution that as Akismet says would “restore [the] innocence to blogging”. But I have no answers.

The spam is so out of control on my photoblog (pixelpost software) it recieves hundreds of comment spams a day. Just sit and watch the comment list for a few seconds and another wonderful annoyance will arrive. Cleaning out the spam involves mysql database queries that I would take the time and effort to do each time I tried a new comment spam solution that I dreamt would work.

With the Akismet [addon] for pixelpost comment spam became a bit more reasonable. I would take about 20 hits of comment spam a day and I would report each one of those to Akismet. This is still not reasonable though so I installed Anti-Comment-Spam-Addon that places a graphical chunk of numbers the user most enter before the post will get through. I thought that this was the final end to the sad spam, but I was wrong. I am still getting between 5 and 10 comment spams a day. I have no idea how they get posted despite this addon and I am now considering closing off public comments completely as I don’t have the time for the battles. What to do?

Wordpress spam has also seemed to be kicked up a notch lately. I’ve been using and loving Bad Behavior for a long time now but have reciently been getting spam slipping past it as well. Are the comment spammers becoming more advanced or what?

Image Board Up and Running

Cory Maddox @ 11:26 pm Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

I finally set up my own host name through BlueHost yesterday so I could experiment with different things before I try to implement anything here. Check out the first thing I implemented last night. Set up my own Image/message board. It is based on the anonymous model, with no registration required. Was a pain to get it to look how I wanted to, but I got all the framework done and my basic layout complete. :) Just click the image to check it out, and feel free to post an image or message or whatever.

What this also means is we have more bandwidth and space to work with here at Fat Penguin if we ever need it.

R.I.P. Tiger Whiptail

Cory Maddox @ 10:05 am Thursday, July 13th, 2006

Rest in peace, (and unfortunatly pieces), my little lizard friend. Two weeks ago durning my 9 day vacation I headed up to Mammoth Pool near Yosimite for some fishing and camping. While I was up there, with the help of my two young cousins distracting it, I managed to catch an elusive tiger whiptail. These lizards are lightning fast, moving the distance of a football field in mere seconds. Was excited to finally have one of these, since I had tried catching them before to no avail. I used a fishing pole with a very loose noose to slip around its next while my cousins scared it where I needed it to be. BAM….

march of the penguins case cover

I just finished watching March of the Penguins this evening. It has been on my list for a while but I couldn’t see how fat penguins waddling around was going to be as amazing as everyone makes it out to be. I was going to see it at some point though, just because I am a Penguin fan.

There are Fat Penguins and Fatter Penguins and now Man touching Man Penguins?

Scott Rippee @ 8:36 pm Wednesday, February 8th, 2006

Yahoo news is running an article: Germany’s gay zoo penguins still fending off female advances.

So this is Sechs Punkt and Schraegstrich. Of 10 male penguins, they and 4 other male penguins have coupled together to hang out and they “refusing to mate with females of the species flown in from Sweden in 2005.”

gay penguins

The problem was that the female Humboldt penguins have proven too shy in their advances, the director of the zoo in the northern port city of Bremerhaven said.

The zoo has 10 male penguins of which six have shown strong signs of preferring male company and formed couples among themselves.

The initiative to “turn” the penguins and make them mate had prompted a furious response from gay rights groups.

A “furious responce”? I do not think that there were any physical threats were made against the penguins to encourage them to breed with the females? Any guns? Knives?

Anyways, I do not really care if these penguins are gay or not…. but I am not sure that the coupling together and not mating with the females makes them gay. If they were loners and wouldn’t mate with the females then they would just be considered sexually frustrated. I definately suggest a study. Each of the six penguins need to be shown large amounts of man penguin touching man penguin porn and large amounds of man penguin touching woman penguin porn. Judging by their facial expressions, retina state, and wedding tackle dongle they will know which penguins are probably gay. Then, to be sure, they need to forcefully try to get them to mate with females and forcefully get them to mate with males. Whichever the penguins enjoy more will reveal the truth.

And one other suggestion that will make everyone happy. These penguins look way to thin. If they could get these penguins some decent food (maybe some rainbow rolls and plenty of sake) the would eventually become so fat and atrocious that they wouldn’t be able to bare the idea of coupling with each other. The would then become loners and reach the happy state of sexual frustration.

Penguin Waddle 2

The Kurz Research Group is doing some very interesting testing.

Our experiments will provided insight on how penguins are able to use side-to-side motion for stability and how they harvest the mechanical energy from the waddling pattern. Based on our insights, we are developing new biotechnologies that will allow humans to use similar locomotive strategies to harvest the mechanical energy in the locomotive pattern and ensure stability.

This seems a bit silly, but who knows they may eliminate the need for the “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” lady.

The Huge Game of Virtual Web Stock

Scott Rippee @ 8:12 pm Sunday, January 22nd, 2006

At alexadex.com you can play a game of trading stock that is based on the amount of traffice that sites are getting (at least from the people who are using alexa.com’s toolbar). They use these traffic stats and a tree trunk times punpkin pi formula to determine share count and the price that it is going for . Beyond that it works pretty much like the stock market, you try to buy stocks from a site while they are cheap and then sell them when they are more expensive (when the site is getting more hits). This is a really cool idea! I am not going to spend the time to start playing, but I did buy a few shares of hypexr.org stock.

greedy stock

Over at internetstockblog.com they ask a interesting question: Is AlexaDex a Useful Stock-Picking Tool Or Just A Fun Game? and conclude with:

But there’s one glitch. Prices are set by current traffic data, not by supply and demand. So, unlike the stock market, prices don’t reflect future expectations.

The key factor that any hedge fund analyst will ask about a stock — What future expectations are priced in? — is missing.

I have to agree with this. Plus I haven’t heard any big news report about the best alexadex.com players getting filthy rich from their knowlege of the game.

Humphrey the Humping Dog

Scott Rippee @ 8:30 pm Monday, January 9th, 2006

In reply to Bucho’s Why You Should Always Lock Your PC:

Check this bad boy chihuahua. He humps anything and everything that you strap him on to with full sound effects and changing speeds!
Humphrey the Humping Dog

The best part is this video of Humphrey in action.
Its no wonder this has been sold out for weeks now! haha

So there is this guy: pink panther humping dog

who may/will try to take advantage of you when you fall asleep…

or his stuffed counterpart: humphrey the humping dog large

who will only take advantage of you only when you ask.

Okay I’ve been caught, I just wanted to bring the pink panther incident back to the surface.

1. Fat Penguin
Anything used to break the ice or tension in a situation.

“i tried so hard to break the ice but that craig guy was trying so hard to make sure jonathan and i knew he was the pimp daddy that it left little room for fat penguins.”

Japanese Get Fat Penguins to Exercise

Scott Rippee @ 7:53 pm Monday, December 19th, 2005

“Authorities at Asahiyama Zoo are taking the penguins on 500-yard walks on the snowy grounds twice a day”

fat penguins exercising

I felt the urge to post this because of its relevance to fat penguins. I guess its good to keep the penguins in shape? but I think they are much better off and warmer being fat. Don’t expect any fat penguin exercise programs to show up around here. The fatter the penguin the better.
