Computer Temperature Rising

Scott Rippee @ 11:23 pm Tuesday, May 9th, 2006

I am a little concerned that the temperature in my computer has rose about 15 degrees since I have built the thing, last fall. This rise has been steady. Although it is warmer now, outside, my computer’s temperature does not seem to fluctuate with temp around it. Is this normal?

Nokia E61

The Nokia E61 smartphone was just released. It is quite obvious by its flat pancake design that Nokia is stepping up to directly compete with the ever popular Research in Motion Blackberry.

Disclaimer: I have been a long time Nokia fan, so this blog entry will most likely be highly biased. :)

The All Seeing Tongue

Brain Port

This article from CNN.com is crazy! I can’t really describe this better then they can:

In their quest to create the super warrior of the future, some military researchers aren’t focusing on organs like muscles or hearts. They’re looking at tongues.

By routing signals from helmet-mounted cameras, sonar and other equipment through the tongue to the brain, they hope to give elite soldiers superhuman senses similar to owls, snakes and fish.

The Cadillac of Laser Pointers

Spyder Wicked Laser

I have always wanted a really nice laser capable of destruction, but I could never justify the cost. Well, I still can’t, but I found a company that sells awesome hand held portable lasers capable of burning holes in black trash bags, popping dark colored balloons, and even lighting matches and cigarettes! It doesn’t get much cooler then this. Wicked Lasers over a variety of high end laser pointers varying from $100 USD all the way up to $3500 USD. They come in Red, Green, and Blue all in various strengths. Check out this helpful chart for strengths and pricing (click to view full image):

Blu-Ray… Bow Down to Holographic Storage

bucho @ 8:42 pm Sunday, April 16th, 2006

Disk and Drive

Bulky? Yes. Practical? Depends. Cool? Most definately.

InPhase Technologies has been the leader in developing holographic data storage for some time now. They have blown away the records for data density many times, and once again they made a new record on March 27, 2006.

InPhase Technologies, the world’s leader in holographic data storage, announced today that it has demonstrated the highest data density of any commercial technology by recording 515 gigabits of data per square inch.

Quiet Bliss

Scott Rippee @ 10:24 pm Wednesday, April 12th, 2006

I haven’t had a quiet room for more years than I can remember. The computer fans that have been in my computers, especially the older ones, sounded like jet engines! But finally I have made it to my bliss and have achieved a quite room.

demon power supplyFirst of all the last PC I built I made sure to purchase all quite parts. I was not sure about the case fans or power supply but I got lucky with both. Antec’s glowing blue case fans are pretty quite and push a bunch of air. The Demon 500W also turned out to be quite and very cheap (30 bucks)!

quiet cpu fanI also have a 1.1 ghz AMD T-bird and the fan on that thing was recockalicious. I could hear its high pitched squeal from out side of my room and down the hall. How stupid is it to have that loud of a fan on this CPU? I bought a new one last week and put this T-Bird in its place. :) My last problem with that PC is that the harddrive is much louder than most (also in a bad high pitched way). This was reasonable to fix by having the harddrive power off after 3 minutes and using the suspend option when its out of use. Hardware has come a long way with regards to noise. I have a 10,000 RPM drive that is really quite. It just make a light deep rumbling noise, which is great.

computer in closetThe last step was sticking my clanking 366 celeron, each fan made its own special loud noise, into the closet. Its an email, web, and fileserver so I don’t need monitor access unless it has a problem. When I do need to use the monitor I have to stand on a rocking chair in my closet, which will be a good sight to see when I fall. I am counting this standing as my exercise for today. :)

Other than the demon power supply I have the Nexus quiet power supplies in the rest of my boxes. The fan spins at variable speeds and they are really quiet. Pretty expensive though. For my next one I will be searching for one just as quiet but for less mula.

How To: Make Your Own Portable USB Charger

bucho @ 8:10 pm Tuesday, April 4th, 2006

Although this may look ghetto, it does the job, is cheep to make, and is a fun project for someone that wants to learn a bit about electronics. Also, if the looks bother you, there are always ways to pretty things up.

USB 3

“The project name says it all. It is a device that will charge things like Ipods, PDAs, that accepts charge from a USB port. It runs off a 9-V battery, and through the simple circuit, out comes a regulated 5-V perfect for a USB port.”

How to upgrade your plant

Scott Rippee @ 6:30 pm Saturday, April 1st, 2006

I thought it was about time I gave the plant at my desk a hardware upgrade.

This worked out really well and was quite easy. Here are the steps:

  1. First obtain some high quality, high preformance ram.
  2. Forcefully remove the a module from the stick (a small flat head screw driver works good)
  3. Bend pins on chip outward so they can be inserted into plant leaf
  4. Insert chip onto plant leaf. Optionally bend pins slightly in to ensure a good connection.

So far I’ve noticed much faster production of chlorophyl and thicker, greener leaves. Bechmarks to follow.

Warning: I had an experience with an angry plant keeper after the discovery of the modification. We had a difference of opinion about the impact of a RAM upgrade for a plant.

Scramjet Tested Successfully

UnderpaidLoveMonki @ 1:56 pm Sunday, March 26th, 2006

Amazing technology, I must say…

Posted on BBC News:

The scramjet engine, the Hyshot III, was launched at Woomera, 500km north of Adelaide in Australia, on the back of a two stage Terrier-Orion rocket.

Once 314km up, the Hyshot III fell back to Earth, reaching speeds analysts hope will have topped Mach 7.6 (9,000km/h).

Stratasys Offers Electron Beam Melting System for Rapid Manufacturing and Prototyping

bucho @ 8:31 am Monday, March 6th, 2006

Some of you reading this may have heard of Stereo Lithography Process (SLA) machines or 3-D printers. These machines have been used for quite some time for making tangible prototype parts across all engineering fields in less than a day. They have proven to be invaluable for verifying design before it is sent out to be manufactured or made in-house because of the costly process of making molds for plastic injection molding machines, etc.

It’s About Time!

bucho @ 1:41 pm Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

This relates a bit to Cory’s blog article, Crazy powerstrips, from January 17th, 2006.

Everyday wall outlets have essentially stayed the same ever since they were invented. Luckilly there are innovators like 360 Electrical that have rethought the wall outlet. Is it perfect? No, but what an improvement. This eliminates 99% of the problems I have with wall outlets which is they just don’t work well with wall transformers. This handy product isn’t out yet, but hopefully soon.

Averatec 6200 laptop deconstruction

Scott Rippee @ 12:25 am Wednesday, February 22nd, 2006

This is a quick guide on taking apart an Averatec 6200 laptop.

averatec mobo view

There’s nothing like dismantling a laptop to see if it still works when you get it back together, so this is what Max and myself decided to do.  Many moons ago I stood up quickly when the laptop was on my lap.  It had an ethernet cable plugged into it and this ripped the cable right out and broke the plastic that holds the connector in was broken.  We wanted to see if there was a part/model number on the rj45 connector or the module that houses the rj45, phone jack, and usb ports to see if it would be possible to order a replacement.

You may want to think twice before trying this at home.  This guy destroyed the ability to power his averatec up after taking it apart.

Per Bucho’s note and to reflect the order that I actually did this in unplug and take out the battery before proceeding
