Anime Number 10 on my List: Getting Back My Interest

Number 10 - Get Backers

space When I started watching this I knew nothing about it. It was one of the many animes that came out during an onslaught of titles during the release season. I had went through 9 animes before this and had seen nothing even close to impressive yet. Mostly they were just sports animes and unimpressive schoolkid romance/comedies. The title interested me but I was really worried it was going to be another romance comedy about people who try to get back together or help other people get back together. When I put on the first episode I was pleasantly suprised.

Quick information
Episodes: 42
Year Aired: 2002
Genre: Action/Comedy/Mystery

space What I liked about the anime: I loved the concept of two different people with special abilities starting a company that specalizes in getting things back. The things ranged from miniscule things such as a charm on a keychain that had sentimental value, to precious materials, all the way to kidnapped people. They could get back anything, guarenteed. The two characters were developed very well and the villians and other characters they encountered were always very interesting. The two main characters had abilities that worked very well together, one of then having eyes that could induce complete hullicinations making whoever was affected see whatever he wanted them to see for 60 seconds. The second character was known as the Thunder Emperor and had control of lightning.

space The entire first season was a wonderful story arc with the perfect amount of humor, action, and drama. The story from the first season lead the two main characters back to where they had originaly came from, which gave closure to both current events as well as events from their past. Each episode flowed just right to draw a person in a little more each time. Every episode with the exception of a few double episodes functioned almost standalone. They worked for a different client each time. While they were doing all the individual missions the overall strengths and weaknesses of each character became apparent. To truly get the full range of the main characters and their relationship together and relationship with the villians you have to watch every episode, even if they are standalone.

space What I did not like about the anime: The second season dissapointed me quite a bit. The show started to rely on a lot more slapstick humor and the characters would switch from standard animation style to chibi style to show emotions multiple times an episode. It made it almost impossible to take the main characters seriously at all anymore when things were happening. The character development was not nearly as strong during the second season as well. The animation was still on par when it was in normal and not chibi mode. The second season is what kept this show from rising higher on my list. If the second season had been on par or better than the first season it might have pushed its way up to my top 5.

Conclusion: The first season of this show is a fun, engaging, story with the perfect amount of humor, action, and drama to draw in most people. I recommend watching this to almost anyone.
