PS3 Yellow Dog Linux Install Videos
Cory Maddox @ 12:27 am November 28th, 2006Howdy everyone. :) Due to the demand on the PS3 forums I am making some install videos of Yellow Dog Linux. Sorry about the slightly shaky footage, since I was installing and holding the camera at the same time.
They are a bunch of short videos instead of one long one since the process is taking a while and a lot of people wanted updates as it was happening.
I will be updating this with more videos, as well as YDL running on the PS3. I will also see if I can show it streaming videos from a Windows Vista PC.
Part 01
Part 02
Part 03
Part 04
Part 05
Part 06
Currently not working too well for me, samba network shares, genesis emulation, and 720p and 1080p playback.

Remember that the regular PPC version of mplayer doesn’t take advantage of the SPEs in the Cell processor, so that may be the reason for your poor 720p and 1080p playback.

Can you try show videos of MP3 and Video encoding, or one emu like MAME for linux running in YDL 5?

That is very true. I am interested in seeing if any of the major applications make specific releases for the PS3 when/if the Linux usage on it becomes more widespread.
I would certainly hope it would since Sony has made it so easy to get it up and running compared to other consoles in the past that have great support, and were a bitch to get working correctly.
Ill see what I can do Nemesys when I get home from work later today.

For best results at mplayer, try use -vo fbdev …. this goes use framebuffer not x11 … and it is more more fast!
When NVIDIA releases a driver for PS3/RSX …. we goes to have -vo gl2 …. and more speed…

Excellent videos! Hopefully it won’t take long for software support to improve. Are Cell development tools included with the distribution?

A SDK is included with YDl for cell. Though it is not the same as the one to actually develop games for the system.

That is so lame that they didn’t package it with any flash… not alone 9.

Hello, I’m thinking about installing Linux on my ps3 in order to watch movies with ease. I’ve read somewhere that linux will only show on a hi-def display. Is that true? And which one is the best YellowDog or Ubuntu Linux?
