Oh snap! Here comes the army of angry Mac fanboys. I personally like Macs, they are well built machines for very select number of tasks. I use Windows for gaming (which I do too much of) and Ubuntu Linux for development. Apt-get is irreplaceable in my opinion. So Macs will have to wait until I have some spare change and want a cool toy :)

Well, yeah. I love my Mac. :)
I even like iTunes. Unfortunately it can’t seem to consistently play my music. My music resides on a network share. It’s not an option to place it all on a laptop. iTunes is incapable of playing music from a large library over a network share without the application quite frequently bogging itself down to the point of not being able to respond to UI events.

Have to tried putting the iTunes sharing software on your share (I assume it’s your Gentoo box)? It started out as mt-daapd and now has a name - Firefly Media Server. It’s the same thing I use for OurTunes :) iTunes likes that share.

I had set that up, but there was some limitation that caused me to not use it…… I can’t quite remember what it was. I’ll try again, as that should solve my problem.

I started using the Firefly Media Server, which I already had running and is the newest release.
ITunes works better using this share, but as I went to remove all of the songs from my library I realized that the reason I can’t just use the share is that there is no way to get the songs from the share onto my ipod w/ ITunes.
Is there anyway around this?

Yeah, FMS is good for playback, but you really need a share to copy music.
Fortunatelly, I found a solution to your Samba problem. The problem is described by many here

The key component is “posix locking = no”, which prevents Samba from getting into the weird “Check to see if this is a mac fork of some kind” state, which causes Finder, iTunes, and whatever else is using the share to hand for a long time.
