Damn, that poor little jack ass. I hope that they find the penguin and punish the theif! Then again if I saw him walking around I would probly snatch him as well!!

Bright said the calls seemed to jibe with a report the zoo received Wednesday night. A boater returning from a trip through Portsmouth harbor told a friend: “It must be cold out there — I’ve just seen a penguin.” Bright said the friend, realizing it must have been Toga, called the zoo.”

I looked for more information about this (01-14-2006) and found nothing new. At this point Toga is assumed to be dead.

From what I have read with regard to this story, it is far more likely that Toga was grabbed by professionals who stole him for a private bird collector. This is something that happens from time to time. I believe that if a private individual stole him for a Christmas present, a friend or relative would have called the police about it, or the person himself would have realized he was in over his head with the care of a baby animal and all the media about it ,and could get in a huge amount of trouble if it died. A private person just wouldn’t be smart enough to get away with it. A pro, on the other hand, could pull it off. The good news would be, Toga would be alive and well (though I think it is terrible to put a baby animal through this, and it is still taking a risk)….the bad news is, we’ll probably never find him. I hope the facility he was stolen from uses the considerable money amassed as a reward for security upgrades.

I hope they find that poor little penguin! He is so cute, and hopefully nothing bad happened to him. The people who stole him deserve bad things to happen to them!

I agree with Buffyenta. I’d like to think Toga is being cared for properly and is alive. Even if he can’t be with his parents, hopefully the people that wanted him bad enough to steal him from his parents at such a young age are aware of how to take care of him. Such a sad story and I can’t believe there wasn’t better security at the zoo. These thieves were able to get into the zoo AND get into the penguin area. That’s horrible. I hear the penguin parents, Oscar and Kyala have recently produced an egg and are expecting their second offspring. Hopefully the proper care is being taken to protect them.
