Yahoo! Mail doesn’t like my OS?
Scott Rippee @ 10:08 pm January 10th, 2006Logging into yahoo mail tonight (first time in a month or so) I get this message:
Caution: rough seas ahead. Your operating system is not officially supported.
The new Yahoo! Mail Beta hasn’t been tested on your operating system. You can continue at your own risk anyway, or simply go to the original Yahoo! Mail.
“rough seas ahead” Is this a bad joke? Does it really care about my OS? I remember using their beta on this same Gentoo Linux OS previously. Maybe Yahoo! decided it was a good idea to embedd ActiveX into their future online mail app? Anywayz, this just seemed lame. I’m off to try the beta despite the “rough seas” and then even fire up the windows box to take a peek in IE. I need a bigger boat.

Scott, there’s no ActiveX in Yahoo! Mail Beta. I’m guessing the user agent string sent by Firefox (I’m assuming you were using FF) on Gentoo probably just didn’t match the pattern we were looking for. I’ve had good luck with Firefox on virtually every platform I’ve tried (Windows, MacOS, FreeBSD).

That message only showed up for a short amount of time. Now when I go to the yahoo mail beta, with ff on gentoo, there are no messages, like the one above, and it looks great.
